In which I babble about the spinning that’s been keeping me from making progress with knitting.

Am at Alamo Drafthouse to see Amadeus – never seen it in a theater before, and they have live music for the intermission!

Didn’t want to bring my sweater since it’s charted, and the Solstice Slip sock I’m doing is, inconveniently, at the heel turn right now. So I’ve brought my old standby the Prismatic Scarf, which needs neither chart nor light.

I think it’s time to give up any hope of a sensible chronology on this blog… so, embracing the non-linear, I’m skipping over all the other knitting related stuff I’ve been doing lately to bring you the story of The Swatch.

Now, understand that I have never made a fitted sweater. I make socks; I make hats; I make gloves of different lengths and with varying numbers of fingers. But the only sweater I’ve made for myself is an oversized Elspeth Lavold coat that fits like an extremely expensive sack of potatoes. Fitting a sweater to my figure has always seemed like it will be a nightmare because finding clothes that fit is always a nightmare. Being short-waisted is worse than being fat, y’all. I can always buy a bigger size, but there’s no way to fix a shoulder-to-bust measurement that’s too long.

Still, I’d like a sweater. It’s the kind of challenge for me that socks are for other knitters. Continue Reading »

So apparently WordPress for iPhone ate the entire post I wrote this morning. I am not amused.

The short version: if you need to make a last-minute gift, go here. http://olgajazzzy.blogspot.com/2010/12/cable-braided-necklace.html

Two hours of work, 8-9 grams of leftover sock or sport weight yarn, and one pretty button. Or one coordinating plastic button would be serviceable, if that’s all you’ve got on hand.

It’s also a great project for a beginning knitter to get lots of practice with knits, purls, starting rows, and figuring out every possible way to do a 9 stitch row wrong. But with a temptingly pretty picture to encourage them to keep going. 🙂

Watson overall2

This entry contains the full text and pictures from the PDF pattern, available for free through Ravelry here, with a bit of extra blathering since formatting is less critical. Ever since getting an iPad my appreciation for web patterns vs fixed-format PDFs has skyrocketed, so I decided to make this available in both formats. As a former technical writer and all-around persnickety person, I think the pattern should be error-free, but it is still my first published pattern and I welcome feedback, either in comments here or at my blog/Ravelry name @gmail.com.

I’ve had to set aside the Watson socks while I work on some deadline knitting for a wedding at the end of this month, but I’ve taken the weekend off to go on a yarn crawl… eleven stores in four days and about 550 miles, whee!

So until I get time to post yarn crawl pics or finish the Watson sock pattern or do any other general updatey stuff, have a picture of the four sausage plate at The Dodging Duck in Boerne, TX.

I thought about imitating the Yarn Harlot and joining the autograph line to ask Ron Glass to take a picture holding my sock, but my actual feet were already offering to cramp up, so I’m just going to sit here and knit until the Dr. Horrible pre-show starts.

At Cafe Blue in Volente, TX. It’s a gorgeous 90F today — we had a cold front come through yesterday. This is Texas in September, folks.
